One of the few remaining wetlands in west central Scotland, the reserve includes a large shallow loch, wet meadows and ponds surrounded by sedgebeds. Among the breeding birds are great crested grebes, teals, pochards, water rails and black-headed gulls. In winter whooper swans, greylag geese, gooseander and goldeneye are to be seen here.
This well established reserve has a visitor centre with observation tower, shop, nature trails and four hides. An active events programme runs throughout the year.
