This splendid Augustinian abbey was founded by David I around 1138. It was destroyed in 1544-45 by the Earl of Hertford, who in the same year set fire to Edinburgh. This was a time known as the ‘Rough Wooing' when the English King Henry VIII tried unsuccessfully to unite the kingdoms by persuading the Scots that the infant Mary Queen of Scots should be betrothed to his young son.
A few years later in 1560, with the Reformation, the monastery closed, and its buildings were gradually ‘quarried' for their stone.
The Abbey Church, however, was used as a parish kirk until the last century. Although roofless, it remains remarkably intact. The story of the abbey is told in the award winning visitor centre. Various finds from recent excavations, including the 12th century ‘Jedburgh Comb', are on display.
