This clifftop mansion was built by Robert Adam for the last Earl of Cassillis in 1772-1790. There have been castles on this site since the late 14th century. The interior with its spectacular oval staircase and circular saloon is strikingly elegant. There is a fine collection of pictures, 18th century furniture and an armoury.
The country park, with its beaches and rockpools, deer park, woodlands, gardens and vinery, has a wealth of interest. The beautiful Camellia House, Ice House and unique Pagoda have recently been restored.
The visitor centre has a exhibition on the history of the castle and estate. Licensed restaurants, snack bars, plant centre, farm shop and park shop, ranger service, events and guided walks, and adventure playground.
